The 2000 GMC Sierra is a rugged and reliable full-size pickup, but many base and mid-level trims left the factory without one desirable feature: fog lights. Adding factory-style fog lights not only improves visibility in poor weather—cutting through rain, snow, and fog—but also dramatically enhances the truck’s front-end appearance. While aftermarket universal kits exist, installing genuine-style fog lights that look and function like original equipment is a rewarding weekend project that requires moderate mechanical skill and basic electrical knowledge.

Choosing the Correct Components
For a clean, factory look, you need the right parts. The 1999–2002 GM pickup platform uses rectangular fog lights mounted in the lower front bumper valance. Source a set of OEM-style fog light housings, which typically come with the lens, reflector, and a weather-sealed housing. You will also need the factory-style wiring harness with a relay, a dashboard switch (often integrated into the headlight switch panel or a separate rocker switch), and the correct mounting brackets. Many aftermarket suppliers offer complete plug-and-play kits designed specifically for this generation Sierra. Avoid cheap universal lights that do not fit the bumper cutouts, as they will look out of place and may not seal properly against moisture.
Removing the Bumper Valance and Mounting the Lights
Start by parking on level ground and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. The fog lights mount into the lower valance—the plastic piece directly below the front bumper. On most 2000 Sierras, the valance has pre-marked or pre-cut knockouts for fog lights. If your valance is solid, use a sharp utility knife or a Dremel tool to carefully cut out the openings, following the molded guide lines. Once the openings are ready, insert each fog light housing from the front and secure it using the factory-style brackets and screws from behind. Ensure the lights sit flush and are aimed slightly downward to avoid blinding oncoming drivers.
The Headlight Connection and Power Routing
This is where the headlight system plays a crucial role in your fog light installation. On the 2000 GMC Sierra, the preferred way to wire fog lights is to tap into the low-beam headlight circuit for the relay trigger signal. This ensures that the fog lights can only turn on when your headlight low beams are active, preventing you from accidentally leaving them on after the headlight switch is off. Locate the 2000 GMC Sierra headlight relay or the low-beam wire at the driver’s side headlight connector—typically a brown or tan wire. Use a fuse tap or a T-tap connector to run a trigger wire to your new fog light relay. This setup also allows the fog lights to turn off automatically when you switch to high beams, which is a factory-style safety feature. If you do not integrate the headlight circuit, you risk draining your battery or running the fog lights illegally when only parking lights are on.
Wiring the Relay and Switch
Run a fused power wire from the positive battery terminal to pin 30 on a standard automotive relay. Ground pin 85 to the chassis. Connect the trigger wire from the headlight low-beam circuit to pin 86. Finally, run a wire from pin 87 to the positive leads of both fog lights. Ground the negative leads of the lights to a clean metal surface near each light. Inside the cab, install the dedicated fog light switch in a blank dash panel. This switch interrupts the trigger wire from the headlight circuit, giving you manual control while still requiring the headlight to be on.
Final Adjustments and Testing
After completing the wiring, reconnect the battery and test the system. Turn your headlight low beams on, then press the fog light switch. The new lights should illuminate. Switch to high beams—the fog lights should turn off automatically. Aim the lights using the adjustment screws on each housing so the beam pattern hits the road about 20 to 30 feet in front of the truck. Finally, seal all wire connections with heat shrink tubing and zip-tie the harness away from hot or moving parts. With factory-style fog lights properly installed and integrated with your headlight system, your 2000 GMC Sierra will look sharper, drive safer, and retain a completely original appearance.
