When the pilot decides to initiate reverse thrust, typically during the landing phase, the intricate machinery within the TRAS springs into action. The clamshell doors, which are a part of the nacelle structure, rotate to uncover the previously sealed ducts. Simultaneously, they close off the normal exhaust exit, effectively blocking the rearward flow of exhaust gases.

With the ducts now exposed and the normal exit sealed, the thrust reversal process commences. Within the ducts, vanes or other aerodynamic surfaces are positioned strategically. These vanes can be adjusted to redirect the flow of exhaust gases in a forward direction, effectively opposing the aircraft's forward motion. This redirection of exhaust gases generates a reverse thrust force, which acts as a powerful braking mechanism.
