Beware of low-quality suppliers Supplying expired and off-spec Prepeg carbon fiber!!!

In the composite industry, off-spec and expired prepreg and other materials are sold at a cheap price. So, the buyer should be aware of the quality that they are buying. Carbon fiber sheets that you are getting at cheaper prices or these lucrative deals that you seem great also come with a huge risk of product quality. If you use expired prepreg carbon fiber, it leads to several compromises in the quality of the final or finished product. Some critical issues of using expired Carbon fiber are:

  • Resin degradation

The resin present in carbon fiber can degrade with time with exposure to light, oxygen, and heat. This results in the loss of various resin properties including its bond strength with the carbon fiber. This also impacts the mechanical properties of the composite resulting in reduced stiffness, strength, and resistance of Kohlefaserplatten.

  • Cure cycle issues

A specific cycle issue is involved in a process that involves the requirement of controlled temperature and pressure. This has been done to activate and set the resins. The curing process is required to let resin bond with the carbon fibers and solidify to create a strong and stiff composite. If you use expired or bad quality prepreg then the resins may not cure properly and at high temperatures, they might lose their properties. It leads to weaker joints and reduced performance.

  • Reduced tackiness

Tackiness is the word that refers to the adhesiveness quality of resin in carbon fiber. Proper placement and consolidation during Kohlefaser Herstellung are required to attain the correct properties. If you don’t use the right quality of fiber then over time, the tackiness of the resin will decrease which will make it complex to handle and position the prepreg material adequately. This means you won’t be able to get proper fiber alignment which results in inconsistencies in the laminate structure and also results in voids and weak spots in the composites.

  • Structural integrity issues

With the combination of the above things like incomplete or improper curing process, resin degradation, and moisture absorption, it is common to compromise the structural integrity. The degraded resin won’t provide the right strength and bonding between the carbon fibers which reduces the load-bearing capacity failing. The carbon fiber won’t provide the required strength and stiffness to the applications where they have been used. With moisture absorption, these issues can also cause swelling, change in dimensions, and weakening of the structure which means the carbon fiber is not a great option to use in a wide variety of applications because it will be very risky.

Conclusion

In the end, using expired prepreg carbon fiber introduces uncertainties and challenges in quality control. The expiration dates present on prepregs are based on testing and the date till they can provide consistent performance therefore, it is a bad idea to invest in expired materials making it difficult to access the quality of the product. Therefore, the final product won’t contain the properties that you want in the desired product.
