Cummins’ Unique Fuel System

Features of the PT Fuel System

Cummins engines feature the proprietary PT fuel system, whereas many other brands use high-pressure common-rail systems. The PT fuel system injects fuel into the injector through a metering orifice and sprays it into the cylinder combustion chamber. The injector plunger is driven by a series of mechanical components, including the diesel engine crankshaft gear, camshaft, cam roller, pushrod, rocker arm, and lever system.

After injection, the plunger pauses, allowing approximately 80% of the fuel to circulate back to the fuel tank, which also helps cool the injector. Because fuel delivery depends on both fuel pressure and injection timing, this system is referred to as the PT fuel system.
