Senior defence officials have written a joint letter arguing there is a moral case for rearming Europe against the threat posed by Russia.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, who is the head of Britain's armed forces, and his German counterpart, General Carsten Breuer, said Russia's threat posture had "shifted decisively westward".
Sky News military analyst, Prof Michael Clarke, says the "peace dividend" that allowed European countries to allocate more funding to domestic issues over defence is over - and politicians must now make "era-defining choices".
