Netflix's new Asterix and Obelix series release date, plot, trailer and Shrek link
Netflix is set to release a new comedy series based on a cherished character that the whole family can enjoy.Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight, the latest adaptation of the popular French comic book series, will be available for streaming from April 30. The series chronicles the adventures of the brave Gaul Asterix, his best friend Obelix, and their village, which has remained defiant against the Rome Empire across numerous publications.Their resistance is largely due to a magic potion that instantly boosts their strength upon consumption. Obelix, having fallen into this potion as a child, enjoys its effects permanently. This aids their village in warding off Julius Caesar's Roman Republic Army in a non-historical depiction of the period following the Gallic Wars. But what exactly is this new Netflix series about? When will it be available for streaming, and how does it relate to the animated classic Shrek? Here's all you need to know.Netflix is releasing a new series based on an Asterix comic(Image: Netflix)What is Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight about? As per Netflix's Tudum website, the series is set in the midst of the first millennium, with Rome eager to conquer the last independent village in Gaul, home to Astérix and Obélix, reports the Mirror. The key to their combat prowess lies in the aforementioned magic potion, concocted by the druid Getafix. However, when Getafix suffers from amnesia and forgets the recipe, the villagers are left defenseless against the formidable Romans. It falls on Asterix, Obelix, and the rest of the Gauls to devise new strategies to fend off the Roman invaders. As per an IMDB list, around five episodes are anticipated, all set to premiere on April 30.Is The Big Fight adapted from one of the Asterix books?Indeed, Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight is based on one of the original volumes penned by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. So far, it appears to be a fairly faithful adaptation. The series draws from the seventh volume published in 1964, which bore the same title in its English version. In certain regions, it was known as The Battle of the Chieftains.Besides the plot details mentioned earlier, the Romans collude with a Gaulish village friendly to them to instigate a ritualistic winner-takes-all fight between village chiefs. They view this as a chance to finally seize control of Asterix's village, and the fight satirizes professional boxing. This is far from the first screen adaptation of Asterix; there have been eight animated feature films, at least two CGI-focused movies, and even six live-action films. One of these includes the Netflix film, Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, released in 2023.The story is based on The Battle of the Chieftans(Image: Netflix)What's the link to Shrek? This fresh Netflix series boasts an unexpected tie to the animated favorite, Shrek. The French-made show is helmed by actor and filmmaker Alain Chabat, who also lends his voice to Asterix in the original French version.Chabat's past roles include sharing the screen with Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum 2 as Napoleon Bonaparte. Intriguingly, he voices the French dubbed version of Shrek across all four primary films, stepping into Mike Myers' shoes.Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight is streaming on Netflix April 30.
