Child dies and several people 'seriously injured' after minibus overturns on major motorway

A child has died and multiple people have been left "seriously injured" after a minibus overturned on one of Britain's busiest motorways.The crash happened on the M4 eastbound junction 10 near Wokingham, Berkshire, on Sunday afternoon, Thames Valley Police said.The highway was closed entirely between junctions 11 and 8 for several hours - while the slip road where the bus flipped is still shut.A statement reads: "Sadly, a child died in the collision and our thoughts remain with the family who are being supported at this extremely difficult time.Thames Valley Police confirmed the death on Sunday nightGETTY"Other passengers sustained serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment. We would ask motorists to continue to avoid the area."South Central Ambulance Service said it was initially alerted to the crash at 2.24pm, with its first units arriving at the scene eight minutes later.Shortly after 9pm, police confirmed the child's death.Five critical care units, including two air ambulances, attended the incident, along with six ambulances - with dramatic images from the scene visible on Highways England cameras.MORE LIKE THIS:Police were still at the scene later into Sunday nightHIGHWAYS ENGLANDPolice and Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue crews were also in attendance.National Highways reported the incident shortly after 2.45pm.No arrests have been made following the crash, police said.Immediately after the incident, eastbound traffic saw 50-minute delays and more than three miles of congestion on approach.Diversions were put in place on nearby roads.One motorist said she had seen the emergency services just before the road was closed off as she drove past."Idiots were still driving down the inside lane they had closed so the emergency vehicles could get through... Hope they all get tickets," she said.
