The world's second biggest city is about to be bigger than Tokyo
With an ever increasing global population, which now stands at around 8.2 billion, cities are seeing the greatest impact. More people are flocking to their nearest metropolis for work and to build their future. As of now, Tokyo is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with an estimated 37 million people residing there, according to World Population Review. Despite having the most populated city in the world, Japan as a country ranks in 12th place when it comes to the number of people living there nationwide. India holds the top spot when it comes to the most populated country globally, with approximately 1,463,865,525 residents as of April 2025. It is closely followed by China, with a population of 1,416,096,094.India’s soaring population figures place its capital city in second place on the list of most populated cities worldwide. Delhi homes 34,665,600 people, as of 2024, which is a 2.54% increase compared to 2023. Mumbai, India’s financial hub also places in the top 10, with a population of more than 22 million. Trailing just under 3 million behind Tokyo, Delhi could soon take the top spot if the former’s population continues to decrease. The Japanese capital saw a 0.21% decrease in its population in 2024, compared to 2023.China, which has two cities on the top ranking list, hosts the second-largest population globally. Standing at 1.4billion people, the country has seen a gradual decline since 2023, despite Shanghai and Beijing increasing in size since that year.
