The government will consider introducing legislation to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal line of succession, Sky News understands.
Such a move would only happen once the ongoing police investigation into the former duke, who is eighth in line to the throne, has concluded.
Calls for Andrew to be removed from the line of succession have increased following his arrest by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has denied any wrongdoing.
