Rescuing an Abandoned 28-Ton Crane That Hasn’t Moved in Years

A friend of mine who deals in scrap gave me a call about something unusual — an old Coles 25/28-ton crane that had been sitting abandoned in a yard for years. Naturally, that’s exactly the sort of thing I like hearing about.

So we headed up with Adam’s lorry to see if we could rescue it. After winching the crane onto the truck and bringing it back to the farm, the real challenge began.

This old machine is powered by a Cummins V8, but after years of sitting unused it had plenty of problems that needed sorting. In this video we slowly work through the issues, bringing systems back to life and seeing if we can get the crane fully operational again.

By the end of the day the crane is lifting properly, moving around the yard, and proving it might just become a very useful addition to our fleet of heavy lifting equipment here at the farm — especially for tank restoration projects.

It’s always satisfying saving a piece of machinery like this from being scrapped and putting it back to work where it belongs.
