In this video, I share a day in the life of a laid-off Big Tech software engineer navigating what I like to call “funemployment.” After leaving the high-pressure world of Big Tech, I suddenly found myself in what could generously be described as involuntary early retirement. Instead of sprint planning, code reviews, and production incidents, my days now involve figuring out how to structure life so it feels productive, meaningful, and slightly less like I’m slowly evolving into a house cat.
So what does a typical weekday look like after a tech layoff?
It starts with the usual modern morning ritual: doomscrolling the news, checking markets, layoffs, and global chaos while attempting to wake up like a functioning human. After coffee (the essential software engineer reboot protocol), I spend time exercising, enjoying the sunrise, and surviving the morning chaos of getting kids ready for school.
Once the house quiets down, the real funemployment routine begins. I work on creative projects like editing vlog shorts, writing a tech newsletter, and building a small solo side project that might someday turn into something bigger. Along the way I practice Chinese reading, respond to YouTube comments, cook lunch, and attempt to maintain some semblance of discipline without a corporate calendar controlling my life.
Of course, family life continues in the background, school pickups, homework help, cooking dinner, and the nightly ritual of putting the kids to bed.
This video is part reflection, part humor, and part reality check about life after Big Tech layoffs, early retirement experiments, and finding meaning outside of traditional tech careers.
