The Super Mario Odyssey Movie begins with Bowser and Bowser Jr. imprisoned in an intergalactic facility following their defeat in the Galaxy movie. They are aided by Beanie, a weaselly prisoner from the Cap Kingdom who offers them an escape in exchange for a seat at Bowser's side. Upon escaping, they raid the Cap Kingdom to kidnap Tiara, a Royal Navigator whose spirit-blood allows her to lock gravity coordinates between dimensions.
As Bowser activates his "Gravity Anchor" on the Moon, the Mushroom Kingdom witnesses The Great Convergence: a massive rift in the sky through which other worlds, like the desert kingdom of Sarasaland, begin to physically merge. Mario encounters Cappy, Tiara's brother, who has crashed his ship, the Odyssey, in the Mushroom Kingdom. Cappy grants Mario the "Capture" ability, allowing him to possess objects and enemies to solve puzzles and fight.
Mario and Cappy travel to Sarasaland, where they rescue Princess Daisy from Bowser’s occupying forces. The trio then embarks on a world-hopping mission to collect Power Moons—the only fuel capable of powering the Odyssey enough to reach the Moon. Their journey takes them through the urban sprawl of New Donk City, where they assist Mayor Pauline, and the treacherous Ruined Kingdom.
The climax occurs at the Moon, where Bowser is attempting to finalize the permanent merge of all realities. In a final, desperate battle, Mario "Captures" a massive projectile to destroy the Anchor. While the kingdoms stop colliding, they remain closer than ever, creating a new, interconnected world. However, the explosion releases a shimmering purple Wonder Energy, which infects a defeated Bowser, setting the stage for a new, mutating threat.
