The UK’s position on the Falkland Islands “isn’t going to change”, Downing Street has said, amid reports that the US could review its support of Britain’s claim to the territory.

A leaked internal Pentagon memo suggests the US is mulling a number of ways to punish Nato members for failing to support its operations in the Iran war, according to a report by the Reuters news agency.

Britain and Argentina went to war over the islands on April 2, 1982, with 255 British troops, three Falkland Islanders and 649 Argentinian military personnel losing their lives in the 74-day conflict.
