Kherson was the only regional capital that Russia seized during its full-scale invasion, and the only city it occupied on the West bank of the Dnipro - the river that splits Ukraine in two. It was key to Putin’s plans to take the southern coastline, and his plan to subjugate the whole country. But over the course of four months at the end of 2022, the Ukrainans forced Russia to retreat whilst also preserving the city and the thousands of civilians still living there.
