LISTEN: Irish Stew Podcast find their way home to Belfast in season finale
The Irish Stew, a podcast based in New York that tells the story of the global Irish nation, one conversation at a time, has wrapped up their five-day excursion series in Belfast.
"We had been exploring ways to take Irish Stew on the road to Ireland and saw in Belfast a chance to tell compelling stories of a city in transition, to elevate new narratives of a city once known as the center of 'the Troubles", explains hosts John Lee and Martin Nutty.
"With Belfast International Homecoming [an annual conference that connects Belfast with its global diaspora] as our centerpiece, we developed a series we called 'Irish Stew Gets Lost in Belfast.”
"We found that despite a troubled history and contemporary challenges, the people we talked to from across communities have an unmatched passion for their city."
A total of 11 episodes have been released and include conversations with a chef at one of Belfast's hottest restaurants, the creator of an award-winning gin, two distillers of high-end whiskeys—one a few miles away in scenic County Down and the other operating in a Victorian-era jail, a stellar Belfast singer-songwriter, a local poet, and many more!
The final episode, co-host and a Belfast Homecoming Ambassador himself, John Lee, spoke with the event’s creator, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, and Connla McCann, who organizes this and many other high-profile events on both sides of the Atlantic as co-founder and director of Aisling Events.
They share their insights on the purpose, evolution, outcomes, and future of this much anticipated annual event (returning September 25, 2025), and soundbites are grabbed from Dan Dennehy -VP Council for American Ireland Relations, Bryan O’Dwyer, a New York lawyer dedicated to advancing Ireland’s cause in the United States, and Smuggling Nun Poitín’s Maura Clare, another past Irish Stew guest and a 2024 Belfast Homecoming Ambassador.
In the episode, you will also hear about the Homecoming’s sister event, the New York Belfast Luncheon Conference, coming to the stately New York Athletic Club on June 12. A special thanks is given to Tourism Ireland, who provided support to the series.
John and Martin are already planning their next road trip with the working title, “Irish Stew: Off the Beaten Craic in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.”
