Israeli rescue services say at least nine people were killed and around 20 injured after Iranian ballistic missiles struck the central city of Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem.
The strike came as part of a broad wave of Iranian retaliation following a major US Israeli offensive that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel’s air defences intercepted many incoming missiles, but several projectiles still caused fatalities and damage.
Iran has also targeted US military assets and bases across the Gulf, heightening regional tension and anxiety.
President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the Western strikes, warning of consequences for Iran’s adversaries.
Thousands in Tehran mourned Khamenei’s death, while some residents celebrated amid contrasting public reactions.
To prevent a power vacuum at home, Iran appointed a provisional leadership council to govern until a new leader is chosen.
