On February 24, 2023, a wake for a murdered teenager in Handsworth, Birmingham turned into a scene of chaos and terror.
Around 100 mourners had gathered at St Mary’s Church Hall to remember Akeem Bailey, a 17-year-old who had died months earlier after a stabbing in Ladywood.
Then a car drove past the building.
Moments later it came back.
From the rear seat of a stolen Nissan Qashqai, Meshaq Berryman opened fire on the crowd.
Four shots were fired.
Three young men were hit.
Inside seconds, a wake had turned into a stampede as mourners ran for their lives.
But the shooting was not random.
Prosecutors told the court the attack was linked to an ongoing gang conflict between Birmingham groups Armed Response and 9Boyz, and that the wake had been targeted because members of a rival group were believed to be attending.
The gunman had prepared carefully.
He used a stolen car with false plates, left his phone behind to avoid location tracking, and wore gloves later found to contain gunshot residue consistent with the weapon used in the attack.
