Sen. Markwayne Mullin Faces Questioning From Senate On DHS Secretary Nomination
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) will testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday morning, nearly two weeks after President Trump nominated him to replace Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Mullin is expected to face tough questions primarily from Democrats who have refused to fund the Department of Homeland Security for more than a month as they demand reforms to the Trump administration's immigration enforcement tactics.
Noem's ouster, which came after weeks of pressure on the administration after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis, did little to move the needle on the funding impasse. Trump reassigned the former South Dakota governor to serve as an envoy for his new "Shield of the Americas" initiative to fight drug cartels.
The president is backing Rep. Kevin Hern's (R-Okla.) bid to succeed Mullin in the Senate.
