US President Donald Trump has claimed Iran wants "to make a deal so badly" but that "they’re afraid to say it, because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people".
Speaking at a Republican fundraiser in Washington, Trump insisted Iran is "negotiating" with the US in relation to the conflict in the Middle East.
He also said that "there's never been a head of a country that wanted that job less than being the head of Iran".
The US president's remarks come after Iran earlier dismissed a peace plan proposed by the White House, calling the demands "excessive".
It prompted Trump to threaten "to unleash hell" on Iran if it did not accept defeat, adding that the country would be "hit harder than ever before".
