Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has stepped down as army chief and is moving to secure the presidency, in what analysts see as an effort to retain power under a civilian framework.

The move follows a controversial election dominated by the military-backed party, widely criticised by international observers.

Despite the formal transition, critics say the process is designed to maintain military control after the 2021 coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar remains in the grip of a prolonged civil conflict, with the political shift unlikely to change the military’s hold over power.
