Apparently Silicon Valley has a new idea for compensation.
Not salary.
Not bonus.
Not equity.
Now they want to pay software engineers in AI compute tokens.
Yes… tokens. Because running AI models costs money, some companies are floating the idea of giving engineers “AI compute credits” as part of their pay package.
So your compensation might look like:
Salary
Bonus
Equity
…and prompt tokens.
Imagine your boss saying this with a straight face:
“Good news Josh, we couldn’t increase your salary this year… but we tripled your prompt tokens.”
Fantastic. I’ll just pay my rent in GPU usage.
If this sounds familiar, it should — because this looks suspiciously like the old company town model where workers were paid in company scrip instead of real money. Back then you got tokens for the company store. Now you get tokens to talk to the company robot.
Congratulations — we reinvented the company town… but with APIs.
In this video we break down why Silicon Valley thinks AI tokens are compensation, how engineers might be forced to compete for GPU usage, the hilarious future of prompt performance reviews, and the inevitable black market for AI compute inside the office.
Let me know what you think.
Would you accept AI tokens instead of money?
