A torrent of disinformation about the war in Iran is spreading across social media, fuelled by AI-generated deepfakes depicting fabricated missile strikes on Tel Aviv, US bases in Riyadh, and buildings in Bahrain.
Manipulated satellite imagery, including false claims of damage to a US radar base in Qatar, is being mistaken for authentic content by Google's AI tools, whilst Meta's deepfake detection systems face criticism as inadequate.
The US War Department has also drawn scrutiny for blending real military operations with entertainment in promotional video games.
Researchers warn this new wave of AI-driven propaganda is designed to project power, confuse adversaries, and distort public understanding of an escalating global security crisis.
