A 2026 study from the University of Oxford, published in the International Journal of Obesity, provides strong evidence linking high alcohol consumption directly to the accumulation of dangerous visceral fat mass (VFM)—the "hidden" fat surrounding internal organs.

Analyzing data from nearly 6,000 participants in the Oxford Biobank using precise DXA scanning, researchers found that heavy drinkers carry a disproportionately higher share of visceral fat compared to light-to-moderate drinkers, regardless of their overall body weight.
